European Grapevine Moth (EGVM) and Vineyard Management
The European Grapevine Moth (Lobesia botrana) is a destructive pest of grapevines, native to Southern Europe but now detected in various wine-producing regions worldwide. The larvae feed directly on grape clusters, creating entry points for fungal infections such as Botrytis bunch rot, which can severely reduce both yield and fruit quality. EGVM infestations often go unnoticed until damage is extensive, making monitoring and early detection critical. Integrated pest management strategies including pheromone traps, biological control agents, targeted insecticide applications, and careful vineyard sanitation are essential to control populations and minimize economic losses. Understanding the moth’s life cycle, flight patterns, and environmental preferences allows growers to implement timely interventions and protect grape production sustainably.
