There was some research several years back that showed barriers could be effective against sharpshooters. In the case the glassy-winged sharpshooters the barriers had to be very high, like 10 or 12 feet if I recall right.
Now that you have proven that it works for you, you might consider finding a fabric that didn't need to be replaced every year.

Have one acre vineyard in Santa Barbara County.  PD confirmed by Mark Battany of UC.  Fence at border of vineyard/raparian area covered annually with inexpensive netting from Joanne Fabrics (intended for making clothes!) Seven feet barrier resulted in dramatic reduction of trapped Blue-green sharpshooters and resultant dramatic decrease in infected vines.  Must replace barrier annually as weather degrades the netting.

Santa Clara County Update

 

Two infested areas (Capitol and Meridian) are being carefully watched because of GWSS finds in previous years. There has been one find this year in the county, and 16 properties treated around the positive site.

From January 1, 2011 through August 31, 2011, there were 33,897 nursery stock shipments from GWSS-infested areas to non-infested areas of the state. As of August 31, only four Notices of Rejection (NOR) have been issued for viable life stages in nursery stock shipments this year.   

 

During the same period, there were 6,871 shipments under the Approved Treatment Program (ATP). No viable life stages were detected in any of the shipments.

During the same period, there were 5,901 shipments under the Approved Treatment Program (ATP). No viable life stages were detected in any of the shipments.  

 

In August, changes were made to the ATP protocol detailing the procedures ATP nurseries must follow to purchase plants from other nurseries.  Also, loading dock pest thresholds and responses to GWSS finds at ATP nurseries were clarified. These modifications were made to align the ATP protocols with the latest version of the GWSS Nursery Shipping Protocols. These changes can be found in sections 2e, 2g, and 2h of the ATP Protocol, which is avilable at: http://www.cdfa.ca.gov/pdcp/Nursery.html

Three glassy-winged sharpshooters (GWSS) have been found in the area this year, two of which occurred after the completion of spring treatments. The two post-treatment finds were made in August on a single property beside a previously treated site.


By the end of August, 24 additional properties had been treated. According to Deputy Agricultural Commissioner Marc Lea, who is in charge of the effort, the community has in general been very supportive and understanding of the need to treat their properties.

Regulatory Nursery Program 

From January 1, 2011 through May31, 2011, there were 22,523 nursery stock shipments from GWSSgenerally-infested areas to non-infested areas of the state. From all of theseshipments, there have only been two rejections. 

   

Nursery Stock Approved Treatment Program (ATP)     

From January 1, 2011 through May 31, 2011, therewere 4,309 ATP shipments consisting of 1,456,220 plants. EGVM Quarantine in Santa CruzCounty      

An 87-square-mile quarantine hasbeen declared after the detection of two European grapevine moths (EGVM) in theAptos area of Santa Cruz County.

 

The quarantine was put in placeto prevent EGVM from spreading to surrounding areas. Specific protocols willhave to be followed to ship winegrapes out of the quarantined area. Residentsare asked to consume homegrown grapes on-site and avoid movement of hostmaterial.
